Avoid Dialing Direct! Always use a 3rd party service like Startec.
This continues to be one of the biggest ripoffs in the wireless industry and really shouldn't be. Today, there are dozens of reputable 3rd party international telephone services that often charge over 80% less than traditional landline and cellular carrier's "discount plans". There are also dozens of VOIP solutions including SKYPE, Vonage, Lingo, Jango and many others. For over ten years, we recommended a wonderful company by the name of Gorilla mobile. They went out of business last year and we have been frantically looking for a quality substitute for them. We have finally found it with Startec. They offer the perfect solution for our clients in the United States with family and/or Business contacts overseas. They have been in business almost as long as I have, and offer the lowest international calling rates available. Startek has programs for mobile phones as well as home phones. Their long distance calling cards have been extremely popular in Asian and Hispanic markets for years and they have been going main stream rapidly. Check their country/cost indicator

Use Blackberry e-mail to Communicate while Overseas
Over 184 countries have adopted the Blackberry e-mail standard. Most carriers charge an additional $20-30 per month to increase your current unlimited domestic e-mail coverage to unlimited international coverage. Sprint and Verizon have monthly deals at about $65 per month that include unlimited web browsing and Blackberry Instant Messaging. These plans can be pro-rated for as short as a week. Not all Blackberry models have world capabilities. Some of the newer models will support 3G and even work in markets like Japan and Korea. E-mail is a great way to communciate while overseas because of the low cost and difference in world time zones. Remember, you can set up to 10 e-mail boxes per device. This is great when traveling with family or colleagues that don't own a Blackberry.
